The Covenant

And for this reason he is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

The Mediator's Death Necessary

For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.  For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives ... Hebrews 9:15-17.

The solemn transactions between God and man are sometimes called a covenant, here a testament, which is a willing deed of a person bestowing legacies on such persons as are described, and it only takes effect upon his death. Thus Christ died, not only to obtain the blessings of salvation for us, but to give power to the disposal of them. All, by sin, were become guilty before God, had forfeited every thing that is good; but God, willing to show the greatness of His mercy, proclaimed a covenant of grace.

This is unquestionably true in the spiritual.  It is also true in the natural!

This natural covenant that we enter into for our loved ones that comes into effect at the time of our death is our Last Will and Testament.
