A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children … Proverbs 13:22
Wise words from a wise man.Solomon is quite clear about bloodline in both the area of authority and in the area of inheritance. In declaring the inheritance to be, ‘for your children’s children’ he is indicating an in perpetuity in respect of the inheritance.
The law of England and Wales gives us the freedom to nominate whoever we wish to benefit from our estate in the writing of a Will, but without a Will the estate follows the line of the Rules of Intestacy, which may not reflect your wishes, may not protect your loved ones and may leave the ones closest to you disadvantaged.
A classic example of this is that without a Will the surviving spouse is entitled to the first £250,000 of the estate if there are children (with effect 1st February 2009); or the surviving spouse is entitled to the first £450,000 where there are parents or siblings but no children (with effect 1st February 2009).
There have been cases where other beneficiaries have made the surviving spouse homeless in order to realise their inheritance. Most people would not want this to happen.
